Why urgency keeps you from checking

Miqo editors · 1 source

Hurry doesn't hurt your intelligence

Checking is a separate action. Hang up and call back yourself. Open your banking app from its icon, not a link. Ask a colleague whether they really sent the message. Each one requires a pause and a second channel. Urgency doesn't argue with your reasoning - it simply takes away that pause.

Under time pressure, your attention narrows to one thing: getting it done in time. Then you make a decision based on familiar cues - a logo, a department name, a businesslike tone, the right words. In everyday life, this saves energy and is almost always right, which is why the mode persists. The person persuading you doesn't break anything in you: they shape the situation so the slow mode doesn't have time to switch on.

That's why people are targeted more often than systems. Access that people give away themselves bypasses every layer of protection at once - and it's easiest to get from someone who has no time.

How to spot it

Real urgency can usually survive five minutes. Manufactured urgency can't: all its power lies in not giving you time to check. That creates a set of details that repeats almost word for word. A deadline appears out of nowhere: the window will close in ten minutes, but they don't explain why ten. You're told not to check: don't hang up, don't call the bank, don't tell anyone yet - all under the guise of security. The channel changes: it starts in email, then continues in a messenger from a new number, with no history or confirmation.

Another detail is feeling before meaning. Fear or shame hits first, and only then, in the fine print, comes the request itself. The order isn't accidental: while you're reacting, the content gets through without scrutiny.

It isn't about whether you're attentive. Caution lives in the pause, and urgency keeps you from reaching it - so what saves you isn't vigilance but a habit of confirming through a second channel.

That's where protection comes from. Not "be more vigilant" - vigilance is a state, and it runs out by evening. What works is a rule that takes no effort: the more they rush you, the slower you respond.
