What made up the ten years
- The beginningAfter the city fell, the fleet was caught in a storm near a headland and blown off course. From there, everything kept escalating.
- The CyclopsThe hero did not leave quietly. He called out his name, setting the sea god's pursuit in motion.
- The bagThe crew untied a gift containing the winds, assuming it held gold, and the ship was blown away from its nearly reached destination.
- The yearsMost of the time was spent during two long stops with enchantresses. These were not storms, but voluntary delays.
The second point is the key turning point in the entire plot. After blinding the giant, the hero could have left without revealing his name; instead, he shouted it from the departing ship, allowing the giant to curse him by name.
The third point is a mirror image. This time, it is not he but the crew that makes the mistake, out of distrust of their own leader. The story's moral works both ways: they perish because of the leader's pride and the companions' greed.
Why the poem is so long
The poem's symmetry is not accidental: ten years of war and ten years of return. Coming home was a genre of stories in its own right, and what mattered was not speed but transformation: the person who came home had to be different from the one who left.
That is why the hero returns alone, having lost all his companions. By the rules of the genre, he arrives not as a victorious man with spoils, but as an unrecognized beggar, and must prove his right to his home all over again.
The story also works on a practical level. The poem was performed orally, in parts, and each stop was a complete story in its own right, one that could be told in an evening. The length of the journey was shaped by this, too.
Finally, some of the obstacles describe the real dangers of seafaring at the time: currents in straits, losing one's bearings, dependence on the wind, and foreign shores where they had to find food and take risks.
