Where Are the Aliens If There Are Billions of Stars

Miqo editors · 2 sources

The contradiction

Even with slow ships, a civilization could have colonized the entire galaxy in a few million years - a tiny span by cosmic standards. The galaxy is more than ten billion years old, so there has been time many times over.

That means either someone should already have appeared and left traces, or something is wrong with this chain of reasoning. This gap between expectation and observation is what we call a paradox.

Main explanations

The fourth point is worth remembering whenever silence comes up. Given the scale of the task, our searches are like scooping a glass of water from the ocean and concluding that there are no fish in it.

The second point is the most alarming. If the difficult barrier lies ahead rather than behind us, finding simple life on other planets would be more of a bad sign than a good one.

There is also a technical caveat. Our own transmissions have grown weaker and more focused over the years: analog broadcasting is being replaced by cable and narrow beams. A civilization like ours is noisy on the airwaves for only a short period of its history.

This leads to the conclusion many researchers draw. The silence of the skies is not yet evidence of absence - it tells us about the limits of our sensitivity and the fact that we are not searching in the right places or in the right way.

What is the essence of the paradox?

Sources

  1. The paradox is framed as a contradiction between the high probability that extraterrestrial civilizations exist and the absence of observable evidence
  2. possible explanations include the rarity of key evolutionary transitions, the late-filter hypothesis, the absence of intentional broadcasts, and the limited scope of searches conducted
