What a forensic examiner does
An examiner does not read personality. They compare. They need a disputed document and samples known to have been written by a specific person. Then they analyze consistent features: slant, connectedness, pressure, the sequence of movements, characteristic letter endings, and relative sizes.
The approach relies on the fact that people reproduce movements automatically and cannot control all of them at once. A forger usually copies the shape of the letters but does not reproduce the pace and pressure: a copied signature is drawn slowly, while a genuine one is written quickly.

Conclusions about character from letter shapes. Answers what kind of person they are
Comparison has serious limitations. Handwriting changes with age, haste, illness, posture, and even the pen. Many samples are needed, preferably from the same period. An expert's conclusion is also a specialist's assessment, and its reliability depends on their qualifications and on whether they knew the investigators' theory.
Why handwriting does not reveal character
The idea is appealing: hand movements come from the brain, so they must contain personality. It is easy to test. Several specialists are given samples, while the personality questionnaire results for the same people are provided separately, and researchers check whether the conclusions match. In these tests, matches occur at chance level.
Determining character from handwriting: tests do not support it
It is also telling that handwriting specialists identify the writer's sex noticeably better than chance, but do not identify character traits better than chance. So handwriting really does contain information, just not the kind it promises.
The feeling of accuracy comes from a familiar reason. Character descriptions are usually vague and fit almost anyone, while people select matching examples from their own lives. The same mechanism works in horoscopes and personality typologies.
