Why Educated People Join Cults

Miqo editors · 2 sources

An order that explains everything

From the outside, it seems that a person first adopted the beliefs and then joined the group. Former members describe the opposite sequence: first, warm acceptance and new friends; then gradual involvement; and only after that, beliefs that everyone around them already shares.

That is why education does not protect you. It helps you evaluate arguments, but the decision was not based on arguments: the person was not evaluating the teaching. They were staying with people who had been there during a difficult time.

✕ MYTH

Naive and weak people join cults.

✓ FACT

Studies of former members do not find unusual suggestibility or low levels of education. What they have in common is something else: a major life transition shortly before joining and a lack of close connections during that period.

Why it is hard to leave

Involvement usually happens in small steps, each one slightly bigger than the last. None seems decisive, but over a year they add up to so much that stepping back means admitting that everything was a mistake all at once.

The second mechanism is cutting off outside connections. It is rarely presented as a ban: more often, it is framed as being busy, moving in with the group, or being told that people outside will not understand. After a few months, there is nowhere left to go.

  • A lot of time and obligations appeared quickly, with no one to discuss them with.
  • Contact with old friends has decreased, and there is a ready-made explanation for it.
  • Doubts are called a sign of weakness, not a normal part of the conversation.
  • Leaving is described as betrayal or death, not as a choice.
  • Information about the group comes only from inside the group.

The third and fourth signs are the most reliable. It is hard to draw the line based on the content of a belief, but easy to draw it based on the cost of leaving: if you cannot leave without being declared a traitor, the group's structure is already clear.

The main thing we know about supporting a loved one is this: arguing about the teaching usually does harm. It confirms that people outside do not understand and strengthens the boundary. The opposite works: stay available and do not set conditions.

It also helps to keep outside connections. People who have even one conversation outside the group leave noticeably more often, which is why it is important not to disappear, even if conversations have become rare and unpleasant.
