How it happened

  1. The contest. A forum invited users to edit ordinary photographs so they looked like evidence of something terrifying.

  2. Two pictures. One participant added a tall, faceless figure to photos of children and captioned them with short excerpts from nonexistent reports.

  3. The spread. Other users began adding to the stories, filming videos as eyewitnesses, and inventing rules for what to do if you encountered him.

  4. Breaking away. Within a year, the character had broken free of the forum, and many people retelling the stories did not know he had a creator or a date of birth.

The second step worked because of the format. A caption beneath a photo, written as a fragment of a report, creates the feeling of a document, while the abrupt ending makes you fill in the rest, exactly how the most enduring scary stories work.

The third step is what sets this apart from older folklore. In the past, a story changed over years as it was passed down orally; here, dozens of people added to it at the same time, and lasting details were selected within weeks.

Why this case matters

Folklore is usually studied after the fact, with researchers guessing at its origins. Here, researchers encountered a legend with an exact birth date, a known creator, and a complete record of the correspondence, and could observe how a stable core of the story formed.

The details were selected for recognizability. What remained was easy to repeat and redraw: no face, unnatural height, a suit, a forest, children. Anything complicated or explanatory fell away in the very first retellings.

The story also has a dark continuation. In 2014, teenagers committed a serious crime while citing this character, a separate topic about how fiction interacts with reality.

The creator, meanwhile, never hid and said from the beginning that the character was fictional. That changed nothing: some of the audience continued retelling the stories as eyewitness accounts, and the debunking simply did not catch up.
