How a Translation Error Changed History

Miqo editors · 1 source

What happened

  1. The ultimatum. The Allies demand surrender. The Japanese government has not yet made a decision and wants to buy time.

  2. The press response. The prime minister uses a word that means both "leave without comment" and "treat with contempt, ignore."

  3. The translation. News agencies report the second meaning. The response looks like a defiant refusal to negotiate.

  4. The consequences. A nuclear weapon is used a few days later. Historians still debate how much the translation influenced the decision.

The debate is specifically about the degree of influence. The decision to use nuclear weapons had been prepared in advance and was shaped by many circumstances; the question is whether the translation added the final weight to the scales.

Caution is essential here. The temptation to explain a huge event through one small detail is strong, and such explanations spread more easily than complex ones - but that does not make them true.

Other cases

The canals on Mars are an error of the same kind. An Italian astronomer described the lines he observed with a word meaning "channels" or "watercourses." In English, it was translated as "canals" - a word that implies builders, and for half a century the question of life on Mars became serious.

A similar story is known from diplomacy: a phrase spoken by one leader and translated as a direct threat was closer in meaning to "we will outlive you." The nuance shifted, and tensions rose.

There are peaceful examples too. The horned statue of a famous prophet appeared because a word meaning radiance was translated as "horns" - and artists depicted him that way for several centuries.

All these cases have one thing in common: the error arose not from ignorance of the language, but from choosing between meanings. The translator has to choose one, while the original word carried several - and that choice is where a new history is born.

The ambiguity of the Japanese term in the 1945 response to the ultimatum, and its translation as a refusal to discuss the matter, are discussed as an example of the consequences of a translator's choice, while the extent of its influence on subsequent decisions remains disputed. Translating the Italian word for channels on Mars as "canals" helped spread ideas about artificial structures
